Master Class Series – Building Enclosure Control LayersIf you are a designer or builder who wants to achieve a high-performing, durable Passive House building, you need to understand control layers. Control layers are materials and systems of materials that are specially designed, selected, and detailed to control water, vapour, and air. They are placed throughout the building, from the roof, walls, and floor to the below-grade enclosure assemblies, details, and interfaces. They consist of membranes and other materials typically described as air barriers, vapour barriers, and water-resistive barriers, or collectively as critical barriers.

The design, selection, and placement of control layers can be challenging. Given the highly insulated nature of passive house buildings, even small mistakes in water and air control can create problems. Simply adding insulation to traditional wall and roof assemblies is risky, so air and vapour control practices must be adjusted to consider the assembly layers and details. Therefore, to design and construct effective passive house buildings, designers and builders must understand the building science behind control layers.

This four-part seminar series will help designers and builders of large, multifamily passive house building enclosures—whether residential, commercial, or institutional—to better understand the building science behind water, vapour, and air control layers. The series focuses on wood, steel, and concrete buildings and construction types in all climate zones of Canada.

A Pattern Language from Passive HouseHow to Design and Build High-Performance Multi-Unit Buildings at the Lowest Possible Cost

“A Pattern Language from Passive House” is an interactive workshop that teaches cost-effective planning and design of affordable, low-emission, mid-rise, multi-unit, wood-framed housing.

This four-part workshop presents design problems common to multi-unit buildings, followed by solutions that have worked in previous high-performance projects. These solutions are organized into “patterns” using a format adapted from A Pattern Language by Christopher Alexander (et al).

The patterns presented in this workshop are drawn from the hundreds of affordable multi-unit buildings constructed to the Passive House standard worldwide, because this is the largest cohort of affordable, low-emission, mid-rise, multi-unit housing. While these solutions are taken from Passive House buildings, they are applicable for residential building design to meet Step 4 of the BC Energy Step Code, as well as multi-unit buildings aiming for similar low-TEDI or not-zero energy standards. Likewise, while this workshop focuses on affordable housing, the patterns apply equally to market- and luxury-housing projects.

Making the Case for Energy EfficiencyAlthough the benefits of and justification for energy efficiency (EE) may seem obvious to some, this is often not the case for many of our clients and colleagues. Being able to articulate and present both the energy and non-energy benefits of a project or retrofit – from operational cost savings, to conservation, to reduced equipment maintenance – is key to selling EE projects.

This one-day training program is designed as a hands-on workshop during which participants take part in several innovative exercises. The course introduces participants to concepts in communication and financial analysis. After participants prepare their own short proposal, the day concludes with an analysis of one of the participants’ own proposals.

The Making the Case program provides participants with techniques, tools, and hands-on experience with building the business case for an EE investment, whether the participant’s role is internal (securing buy-in from support staff or decision makers) or external (selling an EE project to a customer).

Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP)The Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP) course is aimed at not only preparing participants to successfully pass the exam and earning the CBCP designation, but also reviewing all phases of commissioning projects and learning the best practices currently used.

At its core, building commissioning comprises quality-focused projects that serve to provide documented confirmation that building systems function according to criteria set forth in project documents to satisfy owners’ operational needs. Such projects have been proven to be important because buildings that operate suboptimally tend to have poor indoor air quality and comfort, consumer higher levels of energy, and produce equipment failures. Conversely, buildings that are properly commissioned typically have fewer change orders, tend to be more energy efficient, and have lower operation and maintenance cost. Commissioning can also restore existing buildings to high productivity through renovations, upgrades, and tune-ups of existing systems.

This five-day course is designed to meet the training needs of those who need to know the technical details of the commissioning process – from pre-design, through to the operations phase. The training also provides considerable detail on the fundamental principles of both new building commissioning and existing building commissioning (often called recommissioning). The trainer leads participants through an examination of all aspects of building commissioning by looking at dozens of case studies from successfully completed projects in hospitals, data centers, airports, university campuses, school districts, commercial buildings and more. Participants are also encouraged to produce real-world examples of their own through class dialogue and a few interactive exercises.

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to book and take on the CBCP exam online via ProctorU.

Building Science Basics Challenge TestThe Building Science Basics Challenge Test confirms a learner's existing level of building science knowledge.

Building Science Basics introduces you to the basic premise of building science and energy efficiency in cold climates: understanding the house as a system. There are many components in this system: the building envelope, the surrounding environment, the occupants. The aim of this course is to help the learner develop a working knowledge of how these components are affected by the interactions of heat, air and moisture flow in a house, and how those interactions impact indoor air quality and the need for ventilation.

Building Science Basics is a prerequisite for all Blue House Energy courses and is used as a prerequisite for some classroom training programs. If your level of understanding of building science is high, you may challenge the final test. You may take this test only once. Passing the final test with a grade of at least 80% allows you to register for other courses. If you do not pass the exam, you will be issued a credit for the fees (net any applicable taxes) towards the purchase of Building Science Basics. (Some classroom training programs use the Challenge Exam only, this credit may not apply).

Mike Rogers: Foundations of Increased Sales and ProfitsMany contracting companies don’t build the roadmap to success or align marketing with sales, and as a result end up wasting valuable leads with ineffective sales. Maybe, for example, you are not packing as much punch as you could into that initial phone call with a potential customer, or maybe you’re still committing some major marketing “don’ts” in your sales process. Perhaps you simply need a few sales tips to take your marketing to the next level.

This course will help you align your business to drive sales and help you avoid common sales pitfalls.

Foundations of Increased Sales and Profits is led by Mike Rogers (1964-2018), a legendary trainer in the building performance industry. Mike was a key person in setting up the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR (HPwES) program across the US. He was also principal consultant to the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. In the past several years, Mike criss-crossed the continent, providing business management training to hundreds of contracting companies, as well as delivering dozens of webinars for BPI’s GoldStar Contractor program. We’re proud to offer this course, preserving and continuing Mike’s knowledge, enthusiasm, and understanding of the industry.

While the course is aimed at residential contractors who focus on energy efficiency improvements, home performance and weatherization, increasing sales and profits is the goal of all contractors and builders in the residential construction industry. Don’t leave that money on the table!

Building Strong Market Infrastructure for Canada's Retrofit EconomyThis session distills information from a recent report and sets out a series of comprehensive and specific actions for governments and, more importantly, for industry to build one of the world’s most robust and dynamic retrofit economies by 2030. CaGBC’s research demonstrates that national targets can only be reached by reducing the emissions of the millions of square feet of existing institutional, commercial, and residential buildings across the country. Yet, while green building approaches, practices, and technologies are being widely adopted for new buildings, there is an underinvestment in the retrofit of Canada’s existing building stock to drive energy and GHG reductions. Correcting this underinvestment requires the development of a strong retrofit economy where the market takes the lead in transforming Canada’s built environment to help fight climate change and create new economic opportunities for Canadians.

Patterns in Energy Management BehaviourBehaviour change has become widely recognized as an essential element of energy management. Experts and practitioners widely agree that behaviour change concepts and tools are important to amplify energy savings achieved, avoid energy saving decay and to tap into new energy saving potential quickly. While the recognition of the importance of behaviour change in energy management seems common, in actual practice we find that behaviour change tools and concepts remain substantially underutilized by energy management professionals.

To introduce this topic, I will share my experience and expertise as a leading practitioner of behaviour change in complex institutional and commercial facilities and organizations in Canada and the United States.

Workshop Objectives - Participants will:

Be introduced to some of the general concepts of behaviour change and action learning.
Review a case study to see how the concepts come to life including why a human focused approach matters, when it is needed, how it can be done and what tools and resources help make a difference.
Create a 1 page action plan they can use immediately to start integrating workshop concepts into their day-to-day work.
